So we have continued with our poop issues with Seph. He pooped at the vet on Sunday at a cost of $75. He really hasn’t pooped since so I took him to our regular vet today. He once again pooped at a cost of $66. While the first vet encouraged me to use a thermometer, our regular vet gave me a two foot long “kitty poop kit”. I can deliver a proper enema to a small kitten any time I need to now.
Ok, back to today’s visit. The vet weighed him at 190 grams. When I found him 16 days ago, he was 71 grams. But here’s the funny part – after the enema, they weighed him again and he lost 3 grams. That doesn’t sound like much but it was 1.5% of his total body weight. To translate…a typical 190 pound man would lose 3 pounds in the “process”. I know, it seems like that might be common in many men, but I assure you, popping better than half a bag of sugar out would be unpleasant and a huge relief all in one!
Tomorrow we will start mixing in some solid food with his formula which should supposedly help his digestive tract. Once we finally get this issue licked (momma cat’s may lick to solve this problem…but not this momma…), the vet seemed to think that things are working out pretty well.

Other things are happening with Seph too. His purring is going gang-busters. He is also starting to groom himself and he loves nothing better than to roll over on his back and have his belly and chin rubbed. It is so sweet to see this alien baby turning into a real cat!

Awe. He is so cute. Reminds me of when we had kittens. It was so much fun to play with them. Fortunately I didn’t have to do the thinks you are doing now.
Dude… where’s your paypal button?… these vet poops are brutal.
More belly rubs is my suggestion… gently, clockwise around his belly… this may stimulate some action.
You guys are awesome!
Those are some expensive poop!
I do hope that Seph will poop on his own soon.
Natalie – I wish I had a paypal button! We have tried rubbing that poor kitten all over and exercising his legs and of course, the probes. I could not make him go for anything.
YD – I am confident with the real enema kit that I can make him go anytime now…at no additional cost. Still, I hope he gets it going on his own soon!
Warren, You can try going to the pet store and getting some Bene-bac.
It is beneficial bacteria that helps the digestive system work more efficiently. You can also dilute the formula a bit with unflavored pedialyte.
I love your family for doing this!
We also found a kitten 3 days ago. We are pretty good at rearing them normally, this is our 5th ferrel find. However, this little kitty is very constipated. It had an enema at the vet yesterday and produce 2 1 inch hard stools. It had one soft stool shortly after returning home, and now remains blocked up. We have a boy cat who mothers all the ferrel babies we find. He licks the kitties anus, it opens and I can see poop yet no luck. We are considering using a syringe to administer a soapy enema. Our vet neglected to say how many mls to use. How many mls do you administer? Water? Glycerine? We would love any advise as we are quite nervous about this issue. Thank you.
Rachel – I know your pain…they seem miserable with no BMs. I had to help Seph again today. He had 3 days worth backed up in him again. Our vet told us to use plain old warm water and to deliver 1 ml. We filled the syringe (which the enema tube hooks to nicely) all the way up (about 3 ml) and then squirted the water out through the tube until there was 1 ml in the syringe. I didn’t want any air in the tube because filling his gut full of air seemed like a bad idea. Anyhow, with the tube full of water and 1 ml still in the syringe, we inserted it (with KY jelly) about 1.5 inches. She said to go slow and easy but that it would bend with his internals. I slowly pushed the water in and in less than a minute, he produced a bunch or poop…and stopped whining too. Poor thing was in pain all bound up!
Caprilis – I have heard of that stuff. We may have to give it a try. We have the enema mastered now I think and it works but it’s not a long term solution of course. Anyhow, it is great fun working with this little guy. He is able to stand up now and sort of walk but he is super wobbly…it’s about to get interesting around here!
Thanks for the info. We need to get one of those tiny enemas. We used a syringe with a longer thin nipple. It still seems rather big. We tried 1 ml and got some poop out. It was still very labored. Hopefully he goes with stimulation only tomorrow. Good luck with Seph and thanks for your help!
