Poor Seph has been pretty shaky in the eating department. He didn’t nurse at all when we first found him so I had to force feed him. Now he nurses on a bottle but it is a bit of an effort on my part to make sure it goes into him and not all over him. I think we have it licked now but getting up to speed in the eating department really screwed up the pooping department. We finally “withdrew” a rock-like turd with a pair of tweezers on Thursday, but that’s not going to work long-term.
Although he kept eating, we knew on Sunday morning that he needed more relief. We tried all of the suggestions…rubbing his “rear-facing eye” with a cotton ball, holding his hind-quarters under warm water, etc. Nothing worked. Finally I decided to take him to the vet for a look.
After the techs gave a few “ohhs” and “ahhhs”, they whisked him to the rear (;-)) where they began an exam. Of course, the first thing they did was take his temperature…with what seemed like a huge thermometer…in the butt. The poor thing squealed and dropped everything he had been holding in. ”Well doc, that’s all I needed.” ”Ok, that will be $75.”
In case I need to help poor Seph next time, I asked her how to properly “take the kitty’s temperature”. ”Just get a thermometer, preferably a rectal one, and lube it up with a bunch of K-Y jelly and take the plunge.” ”How far?”, I asked. I won’t give you the details but, Ouch!
So, although it cost me $75, I learned how to make my kitten poop in an emergency and I got the pleasure of asking the pharmacist to get me a tube of the “non-warming” K-Y from behind the counter at the local grocery store…

My goodness, that ‘free’ kitty is costing you a pretty penny.
How does the saying go, “There’s no such thing as a free puppy (kitten). “
It cost a lot but think of all the fun you’ve had…..
Too Funny – as always. It seems like your life and my life are very similiar, always an adventure (and never the “normal” kind of adventure)
Glad to see the little furry ball is still around.
Ouch for both the kitty and your wallet!
Hilarious!
I just found your blog and I am so glad that I did, because we rescued a kitten, around the same age as yours, last year. His eyes had just opened and he couldnt pee or poop on his own yet. We would rub his little bum and privates with a tepid wash cloth to get that going until he could on his own. It was a rough couple of months and took a lot of work but its so worth it. Also, another mistake I made was mixing too much formula with the the water and our kitten became constipated! It was terrible.
Just keep feeding him, and keeping him nice and warm since he cant regulate his body temp. and helping him go pee and poo!
I’ll be sending lots of love for you and your little orange kitten!
-Krystal
ps our little orange kitten we found is not so little anymore
he’s about 12 lbs! and one year and 3 months old!
Hey, Warren… when my cat was a kitten and I was helping her go to the bathroom, well, you know how cats love hanging out with you when you’re in the bathroom? Well, I was going and decided it would be an opportune time to see if she had to go, too, so I rubbed her little bottom with some wet toilet paper… And she went. On my lap.
Nothing like embracing the reasonable but ignoring the logistical issues…
Your list of life skills just keeps on growing!!!
Glad the kitty made brown!
Nothing more funny than reading about poop. Too funny. And for $75 you can’t beat that. They could have charged you for the lesson too.
Amy – I have suffered all sorts of similar issues…I have been peed on several times at work. My challenge then, is to make it look like a cat peed on me rather than like i peed on myself
Capri Kel – and again today!
Loretta – Education costs, I know!
Ceecee – we seem to pick the expensive ones too!
Pa Grandma – someday it will be fun I am sure…someday!
Chiot’s Run – yeah, I am not so sure what normal would be for us…cause we ain’t never seen anything normal!
Razor FF – I know…I do chuckle as I think about all this stuff!
Krystal – I think the suggested mix on the formula is too concentrated. I have started thinning it some and I think it will be much better. Thanks for stopping by!
